The International School of San Salvador was founded in 1979. It
is a proprietary institution, incorporated in El Salvador, with
ownership by the founding Stemp-Ram¡rez family who form the
Board of Directors. There is an elected parent advisory committee
of two representatives from each grade (one national and one expatriate).
This committee meets regularly with the administration to discuss
school plans and procedures and carry out projects which benefit
the students .
The school follows the philosophy of the 'Basic School' which projects
the school as a social organization, stressing academic achievement,
character development, and community responsibility. The curriculum
is similar to that of a school in the US with instruction in Spanish
only in language and social studies for those fluent in the language.
Spanish is taught as a second language to those who need this instruction.
The high school program is US college preparatory with a parallel
program for those who want to study at universities in El Salvador
.
For the 2003-2004 school year 330 students are enrolled in grades
PK to 12. Of these about 20% are US citizens, 40% Salvadorans, 10%
Koreans, and 30% from 30 other countries. The school promotes the
diversity of its student body .
Graduates have attended such universities as West Point, William
and Mary, University of Alabama, University of Miami, and a variety
of other private and public universities. The school is a pre-candidate
for accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
and is a member of the International Schools Association of Geneva,
Switzerland. It is also accredited by the Salvadoran Ministry of
Education .
The faculty comprises sixteen US citizens, five Canadians, one
Philippino, one Indian, and the remainder are Salvadoreans .
The school is housed in a converted mansion on one acre of ground
in a residential section of San Salvador. Although the facilities
are smaller than we would like, the school manages to meet its goals
by multiple use of many of its areas. There is a combination gym,
lunchroom, ballet studio, and a small pool which is used to give
swimming classes to all elementary students. The school has a library,
an art room, and a 24 station computer center. Also, there is a
volleyball court and lighted basketball court .
There is an extensive and varied after-school program including
competitive basketball and volleyball for teams of students in local
leagues and the Association of American Schools of Central America
competitions. There is an extensive intramural sports program including
these sports and others. The school offers elective courses in French,
yearbook, art, shop, drama, computers and journalism.
